Mental Health First Aid is a training course that gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem, or experiencing a crisis, and help connect them to the appropriate care.
The course is delivered in two parts. The first is a 2-hour self-paced online course that must be completed prior to the second part which is a 6 hour virtual live instructor led session. There is also a brief online post-class quiz and evaluation.
- Once the class size minimums have been met, your instructor will enroll you in the course for the date you have selected.
- At that time class you will receive an invitation from the Mental Health First Aid Team <email@example.com>. Be sure this email address is listed as safe on your system to allow the message to reach you. The subject line should read: You have been enrolled in (course date and time ) – MHFA Adult – (Instructor name) on MHFA Connect.
- This email will give you access to the Connect site where you will be able to complete the pre-work prior to your course. You will be asked to change your password upon log-in.
- For the live virtual class you will need to have Zoom installed and a working camera and microphone as it is interactive and you will be required to turn on your camera.
Please note that registration closes 3 days before a class so you can do your pre-work. Please do not sign up for a class just 3 days before if you will not be able to complete the pre-work in the short time frame left prior to the class. If you don’t find a date that works for you, please check back as new classes are posted on a monthly basis.
Upon completing the course you will receive a three-year certification as a Mental Health First Aider. If you’d like more information on the training, please click here.
IATSE Members and those working under IATSE agreements may be eligible for Training Trust Fund reimbursement upon proof of successful completion.
A limited number of partial and full scholarships are available to individuals not eligible for reimbursement. Click here to complete the scholarship application. If you reside in Canada, training is available through the AFC at https://afchelps.ca/mhfa.
